Grape Seed Extract (OPC) and benefits, side effect, uses, dosage,Natural Anti-Oxidant

Grape seed extract is made from the seeds of Vitis vinifera. It contains oligomeric proanthocyanidin. This is a phenolic chemical belonging in the larger group of plant phytochemicals. They are called flavonoids. It belongs to a subgroup of tannins. Oligomeric proanthocyanidin may protect the blood vessels and cardiovascular system. It does this by stopping the breakdown of collagen. This reduces the risk of a heart attack and stroke. It may also have an antioxidant effect. This may lower the risk of certain cancers.

General Information

Common Names: Grape Seed Extract

Latin Names: Vitis vinifera

Constituents of Grape Seed.

The most commonly known antioxidants in grape seed is oligomeric Proanthocyanidin . OPC is a kind of antioxidants too that are effective in overcoming the toxicity of free radicals in our body. OPC can prevent many developments of various diseases especially with age such as cancer, inflammation, atherogenesis, ulcerations, cataracts, Alzheimer’s disease and stroke.

Proanthocyanidins are unique and powerful antioxidants, shown to have exponentially stronger free-radical fighting ability than vitamins C, E or even beta-carotene. These water-soluble bioflavonoids are also active in fatty tissue.

Property of OPC(Oligometric Proanthocyanidins)

Oligometric Proanthocyanidins are a class of biologically active flavonoids.

Proanthocyanidins come in a multitude of chemical structures and sizes consisting of base units called "monomers." Proanthocyanidins containing two or more monomers chemically linked together are called oligomeric proanthocyanidins or "OPCs." OPCs containing two monomers are called dimers, three monomers are called trimers, four are called tetramers, five pentamers, etc.

To illustrate the complexity of the compounds that exist in grape seed extracts, consider this: There are basically two proanthocyanidin monomers called "catechin" and "epicatechin." Each of these bind at either the alpha or beta position on their molecular structures to form dimers, trimers, etc. In addition, catechin and epicatechin can also form numerous esters from gallic acid, called catechin or epicatechin "gallate", as well as various sugar and protein molecules called "glycosides" and "peptides", respectively. In fact, the total number of possible dimers, including gallic acid and glucose esters alone, are 162. And each time you add an additional monomer, the total number of possible combinations increases geometrically; trimers jump to over 550, tetramers over 1,200, etc. The result is, unlike a single nutrient compound such as vitamin C (ascorbic acid) or vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol), OPCs are much more complex and difficult to identify and quantify.

Health Benefits of Grape seed extract

1. Antioxidant Benefits

Polyphenols are some of the most powerful antioxidants that science has discovered, and these substances protect the tissues throughout your body from the dangers of free radicals. Specifically, scientists have found that the antioxidants in grape seed extract can protect the tissues in your heart, brain, and other organs.

2. Circulatory and Vein Health

In 36 subjects, one-month supplementation with grape seed extract (2 g daily) protected blood vessels against free-radical damage by boosting nitric oxide.

In a series of smaller clinical trials (130 people in total), grape seed extract lowered the risk of heart disease by lowering oxidative stress and inflammation. It prevented the oxidation of LDL (“bad cholesterol”) in the blood vessels. Oxidized LDL can trigger plaque buildup or atherosclerosis.

Two meta-analyses of 25 clinical trials (1,200 patients in total) concluded that grape seed extract can lower blood pressure. The effect was stronger in younger participants, obese patients, and those with metabolic disorders.

In 36 patients at risk of high blood pressure, the extract (300 mg daily for 6 weeks) reduced blood pressure and lowered their risk.

Vein Problems and Swelling

In deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot from the legs can get stuck in the lungs and cause a life-threatening condition known as pulmonary embolism.

Grape seed extract (400 mg daily for eight weeks) had blood-thinning effects in a study of 17 older women. This effect effect could potentially lower the risk of blood clots and vein thrombosis, which are much more common in older (postmenopausal) women.

In 16 younger women, both acute and two-week supplementation with grape seed extract reduced leg swelling after prolonged sitting.

3. Benefits for the Skin

UV Protection and Protect skin aging

Moderate sunbathing is essential for your vitamin D production and overall health and wellbeing. On the other hand, excess UV exposure may cause sunburns and skin damage .

The skin of 10 volunteers treated with grape seed extract before UV exposure had fewer mutated and damaged cells and more healthy ones. However, the lack of placebo control and a tiny sample minimize the relevance of this clinical study .

The extract also prevented UV-induced skin cancer by blocking oxidative damage and inflammation in many animal trials.

In 12 women, supplementation with grape seed extract (200 mg daily for 6 months) lightened the skin and reduced face spots.

Its combination with other antioxidants improved skin complexion in 35 women. They were able to get rid of dark circles, face spots, and other skin imperfections. The majority of women (82%) were satisfied with the results

4. Could reduce oxidative damage

An elevated blood level of LDL cholesterol is a known risk factor for heart disease.

The oxidation of LDL cholesterol significantly increases this risk and plays a central role in atherosclerosis, or the buildup of fatty plaque in your arteries.

Grape seed extract supplements have been found to reduce LDL oxidation triggered by high fat diets in several animal studies.

Some research in humans shows similar results.

When 8 healthy people ate a high fat meal, taking 300 mg of Grape seed extract inhibited the oxidation of fats in the blood, compared with a 150% increase seen in those who did not take Grape seed extract.

In another study, 61 healthy adults saw a 13.9% reduction in oxidized LDL after taking 400 mg of Grape seed extract. However, a similar study was unable to replicate these results.

Additionally, a study in 87 people undergoing heart surgery found that taking 400 mg of Grape seed extract the day before surgery significantly reduced oxidative stress. Therefore, Grape seed extract likely protected against further heart damage.

5. Bone Strength Benefits

In addition to polyphenols, grape seed extract also contains bioflavonoids, which boosts your bone strength.

Including grape seed extract in your diet with calcium has a “beneficial effect on bone formation and bone strength for the treatment of bone debility caused by a low level of calcium.”

6. Reduce cancer risk

A high intake of antioxidants, such as flavonoids and proanthocyanidins, are associated with a reduced risk of various cancers.

The antioxidant activity of Grape seed extract has shown potential to inhibit human breast, lung, gastric, oral squamous cell, liver, prostate, and pancreatic cell lines in lab settings.

Grape seed extract appears to protect against oxidative stress and liver toxicity while targeting chemotherapy action on the cancerous cells.

Precautions:

• Grape seed extract is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. It has been used safely for up to 8 weeks in clinical trials.

• Side effects that have been reported include a dry, itchy scalp; dizziness; headache; high blood pressure; hives; indigestion; and nausea.

• Interactions between grape seed extract and medicines or other supplements have not been carefully studied.

Possible Side Effects

Grape seed extract is generally well-tolerated when taken by mouth however it may cause adverse effects such as headache, dry or itchy scalp, dizziness, and nausea.

Dosage

Studies with grape seed extract have shown efficacy with a wide range of doses. Grape seed extract is commonly taken in capsules or tablets containing serving sizes of 50 to 100mg, and may be sold by itself or in combination with other ingredients, including in this anti-aging product. Grape seed extract is generally considered very safe to consume, even at higher doses. Grape seed extract and grape seed proanthocyanidins haven’t shown any short or long-term toxicity.
