Description:
Perennial herbs, 30-60 cm high. Root tubers clustered, fleshy, spindle-shaped. Stems erect, unbranched. Leaves 3-4 in whorls; with short stalks or few sessiles; leaves ovate, to elliptic, 3.5-5.5 cm long, 1.8-3.8 cm wide, apex acute or acuminate, base cuneate; veins usually 5, with 3 particularly prominent middle. Flowers axillary, mostly in the axilla of scaly leaves under stem, pedicels slender; perianth segments 4, oval-lanceolate; stamens 4, purple, septa enlarged into lanceolate appendages, anthers linear, apex with narrow oval appendages; ovary oval, stigma short. Capsule. Flowering from April to May and fruit from July. 2. 100 perennial herbs, 60-90 cm high. The whole plant is glabrous. Root fleshy, several to dozens of clusters. Stem lower erect, upper vine. The root of stemona mainly contains alkaloids, like stemonine,protostemonine, tuberostemonine, stemonidine, isostemonidine, hordorine, sessilis temonine, stemonamine, isostemonamine, stemofoline, isotuberostemonine, stenine, hyoptuberostemonine, oxotuberostemonine, stemotinine, isostemotinine, tuberostemonone, tuberostemonol, stemoamid, tuberostemospironine, didehydrotuberostemonine); formic acid, acetic acid, malic acid, citric acid, succinic acid, oxalic acid etc.
pharmacological action:
1. Antimicrobial activity: Stemona Sessilifoliai Decoction and alcohol extract were tested in vitro against various pathogenic bacteria such as pneumococcus, Streptococcus hemolyticus and meningococcus. Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus albicans and dysentery bacilli, typhoid bacilli, paratyphoid bacilli, Escherichia coli, Proteus bacilli, diphtheria bacilli, pneumonia bacilli, Yersinia pestis, Bacillus anthracis, Bacillus subtilis, and Vibrio cholerae. Mycobacterium tuberculosis and so on have different degrees of bacteriostasis. The water extract of Stemona Sessilifolia has certain inhibitory effect on some pathogenic fungi in vitro, but it has also been reported that it has no antimicrobial effect on fungi. Stemona Sessilifolia could prolong the life span of chicken embryos cultured with Newcastle virus to 36 hours.
2. Insecticidal effect: The water and ethanol extracts of Stemona tenuifolia and other species of Stemona tenuifolia (undetermined varieties) can kill mosquito and fly larvae, head lice, lice and bedbugs. High concentration of 100 parts (unknown species) in vitro and can kill Rat Enterobius vermicularis.
3. Antitussive effect: Animal experiments have proved that Stemona tenuifolia has antitussive effect and can reduce the excitability of the respiratory center.
