Many people use
natural remedies instead of over-the-counter medicines. For example, the Amish
have a tradition of using pineapple juice to treat coughs. Pineapple juice
treats cough mainly thanks to its rich vitamin C content.
In recent years,
this type of home care method has a very wide range of users. Some websites
even claim that pineapple juice is more than five times more effective in
treating coughs than cough medicines. But is this true?
Despite the
medical research conducted on pineapple juice, there is still a lot of evidence
needed for its effectiveness in relieving coughs.
Pineapple juice is
often referred to as a solubilizer, meaning it thins mucus, so it's easy to
clear coughs. Researchers at an Indian institution published a retrospective
article in 2010 that was cited in other articles as evidence of efficacy for
coughing, but this article focused on tuberculosis and not on treating coughs.
The peer-reviewed article mentions that juice mixed with pineapple juice, salt,
pepper, and honey can help dissolve sticky phlegm from the lungs of
tuberculosis patients.
However, it was
not clear whether this finding was at the heart of the study. Therefore, it is
difficult to rely on this finding to support the claim that pineapple juice can
be a cough remedy.
This doesn't negate the experience of those who have found pineapple juice to relieve coughs, it just means that further research is needed to confirm the effectiveness of pineapple juice.
Although the
effectiveness of pineapple juice as a treatment for coughs is questionable, it
does have certain nutritional properties that may help reduce cough symptoms.
Pineapple juice
contains a type of bromelain, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory
and analgesic properties. Bromelain may help relieve asthma and other
respiratory problems and break down mucus. Another study has shown that
bromelain has anti-cancer effects.
Bromelain is not
designed to relieve coughs, but because of its properties, it can reduce some
cough symptoms, depending on the cause of the cough, of course.
When it comes to
the health benefits of pineapple juice, don't forget that it also contains the
following:
1. High levels of
vitamin C content enhance immune resistance and vision
2. Some Fiber
Helps Digestion
3. Manganese,
prevents cell damage and aging
4.
Anti-inflammatory properties of bromelain
5. Beta Carotene,
Copper, Zinc and Folic Acid for Fertility
Given the many health benefits of pineapple juice, there is little harm in using this treatment as an adjunct to relief.
