What is fenugreek?

Common Names of raw material: Fenugreek, greek hay, greek clover, Methi

Latin Names: Trigonella foenum graecum

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-groecum L.) is an annual plant that is native to China, India and North Africa. Its grown and consumed around the world.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek seed

The fenugreek plant contains an array of powerful  compounds that are thought to be responsible for many of the plant's therapeutic properties. For instance, the seeds are rich in saponins, flavonoids and coumarins  that have been associated with many health benefits, such as improving testosterone level, reducing blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Given that the seeds contain high amounts of potent compounds, fenugreek supplements typically contain concentrated extracts from fenugreek seeds or fenugreek seed powder.

Saponins in Fenugreek and their medicinal properties

Steroid saponins

Fenugreek contains steroids saponins, sapogenins & diosgenin being major constituents.  Sapogenins are glycone portion of plant steroid derivative saponins. It has 6-C rings with 2 to 3  side chains containing methyl or hydroxyl group. Diosgenin is a 27-C steroidal compound and used as raw material for making oral contractive & sex hormones. Fenugreek seeds do not contain free sapogenins but they occur as complex glycosides. It is a precursor for synthesizing  progesterone which was earlier used in combined oral contraceptive pills. It has the property to reduce the level of serum cholesterol.

Fenugreek seeds contain saponins in the form of furostanol saponins. Furostanol saponins may be defined as bidesmosidic saponins which have two sugar chains, with one bonded at C3 and one attached through an ether linkage at C26 with a D-glucose.

How to use Fenugreek Seed powder or Extract?Health Benefits of Fenugreek!

Fenugreek may help boost testosterone.

Testosterone is a sex hormone in both men and women that affects sexual function, energy levels, cognitive function, bone health, mood, and more.

Fenugreek supplements are often used by those looking for a natural way to increase testosterone levels.

Human's testosterone levels naturally decline as they grow older, and health conditions like obesity and diabetes are associated with low testosterone, regardless of age.

Testosterone deficiency, or hypogonadism, is estimated to affect up to 39% of men over the age of 45. This condition is usually treated with hormone replacement therapy, though some seek alternatives like herbal supplements.

Fenugreek has been researched for its potential to naturally increase testosterone.

It contains compounds called furostanolic saponins, which are believed to increase testosterone production.

Several studies have shown that taking fenugreek supplements may improve testosterone levels and symptoms related to low testosterone such as low libido.

For example, an 8-week study in 49 athletic men found that taking supplements with 500 mg of fenugreek daily slightly increased testosterone levels and significantly improved strength and body fat compared to a placebo group.

Protodioscin is a type of saponin in fenugreek that may be particularly effective at increasing testosterone levels.

A 12-week study in 50 men demonstrated that those who took a daily 500-mg fenugreek supplement that contained concentrated amounts of protodioscin experienced significant improvements in their testosterone levels.

The study found that testosterone levels increased by up to 46% in an impressive 90% of the participants. Whats more, the majority of the fenugreek supplement group experienced improvements in mood, energy, libido, and sperm count.

Additionally, a 12-week study in 120 men aged 4375 showed that those who took 600 mg of fenugreek seed extract daily experienced increases in testosterone levels and improved libido compared to a control group.

Fenugreek Possibly Reduce Blood Sugar in People With Diabetes

Numerous animal studies and preliminary trials in humans show fenugreek may help to lower blood sugar. In a two-month, double-blind study of 25 people, use of fenugreek (one gram a day of a standardized extract) significantly improved some measures of blood sugar control and insulin response as compared to placebo. Triglyceride levels decreased and HDL goodcholesterol levels increased, most likely due to the enhanced insulin sensitivity.

Another study where 18 people with type 2 diabetes took 10 grams a day of powdered fenugreek seeds mixed with yogurt or soaked in hot water, those taking the seeds soaked in hot water saw a 25% decrease in fasting blood sugar, a 30% decrease in triglycerides, and a 31% decrease in very-low-density lipoprotein, a type of fat that carries cholesterol and triglycerides through your bloodstream. Those who consumed powdered fenugreek seeds mixed with yogurt saw no significant changes.

Fenugreek may also help prevent the onset of diabetes. One three-year study found that people with prediabetes who took five grams of fenugreek powder twice a day before meals were significantly less likely to develop diabetes, possibly due to a decrease in insulin resistance.

LDL "bad" cholesterol was also significantly reduced.

Other benefits and uses of fenugreek

May increase breast milk production. A recent review found that fenugreek significantly increased breast milk production in four out of the five studies included in the review.

Fenugreek Seed Contains anti-inflammatory compounds. Fenugreek seeds contain anti-inflammatory compounds like flavonoid antioxidants, which may help reduce symptoms of certain inflammatory conditions like asthma.

May reduce cholesterol. Fenugreek may decreases total cholesterol levels in people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

May have anticancer effects. Test-tube studies have demonstrated that fenugreek extract can kill certain cancer cells such as lymphoma and breast cancer cells.
